Auto accident takes life of former college football player

The college football community in Louisiana is mourning the loss of a former player. A sudden tragedy took his life at age 26. A former defensive back for the Ragin' Cajuns, Sean Thomas, suffered fatal injuries in a collision that involved two vehicles.

The incident took place in St. James Parish. At this time, there appear to be more questions than answers regarding the exact cause of the accident, as well as the exact cause of the young man's death. Preliminary investigations prompted officials to say they do not believe impaired driving was a factor

Driver negligence is often a key issue in multi-vehicle collisions. If someone fails to adhere to traffic regulations, not only might it lead police to make a traffic stop, but it could also place the driver and any others nearby at risk for injury. Tens of thousands of lives are lost every year because of negligent, reckless or impaired driving.

When someone as young as Thomas dies in an auto accident, it is especially tragic. However, regardless of age, no Louisiana family should have to suffer the sudden loss of a loved one because of a distracted, drunk or otherwise negligent driver. When that happens, the state allows immediate family members to file wrongful death claims in civil court to seek financial recovery for documented losses; even though no amount of money can replace the loss of human life, any court-awarded compensation following successful litigation can be used to help offset medical expenses, burial costs any other monetary damages.
